Check it out...Here's a very uncommon 2 – page handwritten letter on two sheets of colorful RWB "Air Mail" letterhead / stationery sent during the 1940s World War II era from the Great Lakes Naval Station in Chicago Illinois by a soldier back home to his mother. Letter appears to be written by a soldier on his way home from Europe or the Pacific and talks about loneliness and layovers in strange cities and missing home. Letter reads: "Dearest Mom, At last I have gotten far as Chicago and still I don't know how much longer it will be before I am on the way home. But it shouldn't be very long now. I left San Diego last Tuesday morning about eleven and arrived in Los Angeles about two in the afternoon and the next train wasn't until midnight so I went out to see Faith Lawson. Both of her daughters were there and their families with the exception of Ruby's husband and he was overseas but was on his way home. I'll tell you all about that when I get home. From there we went to Kansas City via Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado and Kansas, and there was another ten hour layover. So I called Jayne, the girl that stopped in to see Ruby, and, later went to see her. In St. Louis there was another layover and I didn't know anyone there so I went to a nightclub and got acquainted. I should be able to tell you just about when to expect me home within a few days. You know how my guesses have turned out so far but I expect to be home sometime next week. Will let you know soon as I can get the dope. Sure would like to hear from someone around home. It sure has been a long time since I last heard. I'm hoping that the weather there isn't too cold. Up here it isn't so warm but it's a little colder than what I have been used to. That's about all I have to say for this time so give my regards to all the folks and keep the home fires burning.
