Vintage Turkish REPOUSSE Oval Mirror 900 Silver Hallmarked chain.
Inside the box is a note saying 900 carat silver. The wall mirrors are varnished, do not use silver polish.
This beautifully decorated floral and scroll solid silver mirror was made in Turkey, usually from melted down silver coins in the 1960's. Silver was very expensive and the currency at that time contained 90% pure silver so it was cheaper to use melted down coins (hence the '900' hallmark and not the normal '925').
This type of mirror is traditionally given by the grooms family to the bride as part of her dowry.
The mirror is perfect unblemished and the silver artwork is immaculate and shining and complete with strong chain. See the photos for a complete visual description.
Hallmarked in Turkey 900 & BEDO. Measures approximately 5.5” x 4.25” x .5” High, weighs a heavy 8.2 oz.

You may wonder why unlike other hanging mirrors, the back which is usually unseen, has such wonderfully intricate silver artwork of such beauty?
The answer is simple. The Turkish silversmith decided to make the mirror not only turnable to present a beautiful raised silver wall ornament when not used as a miror, but also to be hand held, hence the reason it rests snugly in the users palm. There are also some customs that believe a mirror should always be turned or down when not in use.
